Electronics Manufacturing Services: Where India stands
The growth of the electronics manufacturing services (EMS) industry is crucial for kick-starting the ‘Make in India’ programme. The more developed the domestic EMS industry is, the faster and easier it will be for large original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to set up operations here. Here is a sneak peek into the Indian EMS industry.

Govt Policies & Schemes
"Several established companies have shown a keen interest to set up manufacturing units in Jharkhand to avail the advantages of our ESDM Policy"
If you think Bengaluru, Delhi and Pune are the only investment hotspots in the Indian IT or electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) sector, you are mistaken. Jharkhand is all set to grab your attention, thanks to the state government’s policies. In a recent interaction with Umesh Sah, director, Department of IT and E-Governance, government of Jharkhand, we got to know how well these policies have been implemented.

Has statistical process control become obsolete in electronics manufacturing?
Statistical process control (SPC) has long been an important technique for companies looking to ensure high product quality. In modern electronics manufacturing, the complexities involved cannot be easily mapped to the fundamental assumptions of process stability. This makes traditional SPC worthless as a high-level approach to quality management, particularly in the light of the increasing amount of data being collected. An approach compliant with the Lean Six Sigma philosophy, allowing a wider scope than SPC, is better in identifying and prioritising relevant improvement initiatives.

AOI systems are critical for detecting faults in component placement on PCBs
Modern electronic circuits are far more complex today than they ever were. A root cause of this complexity is the shrinking size of boards that results in thousands of soldered joints and parts being fitted into a compact space. Automated optical inspection (AOI) systems are needed to detect faults in the placement of these components and ensure the quality of a product.
